We are delighted to be able to complete the picture of the Felix Waitkus flight – this is footage of the flight taking off. We already have footage on our home page of the aftermath of the landing in Ballinrobe.

Airman Waitkus is taking off from Floyd Bennett Airport, New York, on his attempted hop to Kaunas, Lithuania.

Great clip. The tail wheel arrangement is very unusual. Appears to me like four wheels or am I mistaken?

You are right Eamonn, there are four wheels on the box supporting the tailskid. You will notice that this is left behind (00:34) as the plane lifts off. The idea was to allow an easier and faster take off.
